iCross-Cult. Citizen Project: Reflecting on our Indigenous World: Cult. Imperialism of Seminoles: Location & Climate(Matt)

The Seminole Tribe is native to the state of Florida, some of the first settlements were near the Apalachicola River and the central part of the state, they did not move into the Everglades until the near the end of the Seminoles Wars. As a result of the war, the majority of the Seminole tribe was forced to move to Seminole County, Oklahoma. The majority of Seminoles living in Florida are direct descendants of those who lived there before them rather than having moved into the Seminole territory of Florida.

Reflection: This has allowed me to get a better knowledge of the Seminole tribe, it has shown me things that I had assumed about the Seminoles to be wrong. The mascot of the Florida State University is the Seminole therefore I assumed that majority of Seminoles lived in Florida, which majority live in Oklahoma. The people of the Seminole have been very successful with their Americanization, they have gained control of all the Hard Rock Casino and Hotels all around the world. The nation that formed from fleeing became a multimillion dollar industry.

Background and Location

Seminoles are a Native American tribe originally of Florida, who now reside primarily in that state and Oklahoma. The Seminole nation began in the 18th century in a process of ethnogenesis but was not recognized as a separate tribe by the United States government until 1957. It was composed of Native Americans from Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama, most significantly renegades and outcasts from the Creek people, as well as African Americans who escaped to Florida from slavery in South Carolina and Georgia. Roughly 3,000 Seminoles were forced west of the Mississippi River under Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act of 1830 including ancestors of the present-day Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.

Mission, Vision, and Values.

Mission: The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project is a cultural anthropology course-based

project meant to raise critical consciousness about the rich cultural diversity in our

indigenous world. Being totally aware of the limitations of being outsiders, we are a

group of multidisciplinary undergraduate students who believe in cross-cultural

sensitivity and participatory agency aimed at disseminating information about

indigenous realities as accurately as possible.

Vision: The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project’s vision is to create an online cross-cultural

space for students, professionals, and youth to learn and exchange cross-culturally

sensitive information about contemporary indigenous experiences. From that outsider

student’s perspective, we will try to theoretically explore possible collaborative solutions

to problems that affect the indigenous populations of our planet. Finally, we hope for the

future creation of a space where indigenous youth can share their experiences and their

realities with us for real mutual collaboration to take place.

Values:

 We value the maximization of benefits to indigenous peoples and other

vulnerable populations in the world.

 We value the respect for persons all over the world.

 We value the equal treatment of people, and we are against the exploitation of

vulnerable groups around the world.

 We value collaborative cross-cultural learning and critical thinking.
